Furka cogwheel railway engine HG 2/3 at the Realp station locomotive shed. Switzerland, Western Europe, Grimsel-/Furka region, Uri. Note: No releases available. --- Info: In 1914 the first steam trains started from Brig and reached Gletsch traveling along the river Rhone. In the following years the line was extended and finally connected in Disentis with the Rhätische Bahn in 1926. Although the Furka-Oberalp-Bahn was electrified in 1942, due to the extreme climate and the topography of this alpine area the trains could not run between Oberwald and Realp through the winter. So in the 1970's a modern tunnel was built for all year use. In 1983 the Furka Cogwheel Steam Railway Club was founded by railway enthusiasts to repair and maintain the original track and rolling stock. This included bringing back and restoring the original steam engines that were sold of to Vietnam in 1947. In late summer 2010 the historic steam link over the Furkapass was finally fully reestablished!
